GLY 4780 and GLY 5257 Geologic Field Excursions
Syllibus-Spring 2007
Field Trips: The last field excusions course I offered was conducted jointly with Dr. Chuck Connor's undergraduate course in volcanology and covered the regional geology of the Idaho-Wyoming-Utah-Montana region. We discussed a wide variety of topics including Proterozoic "Snowball Earth," late Mesozoic Sevier Orogeny, Eocene magmatic Flare-up, and the Yellowstone Hot Spot track. The field trip began out of Las Vegas with a night at Bryce Canyon National Park after which we drove to Salt Lake City for a night of St. Patty's day celebration. The next day we headed to Pocatello, Idaho and then on to the Snake River Plain. We camped for four cold nights at Craters of the Moon National Monument. During that time we visited several volcanic fields, the fault scarp to the 1983 Borah Peak Earthquake, and the Grand Tetons National Park.
