CALL FOR PAPERS

40TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE
SOCIETY FOR SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE
HISTORICAL STUDIES

MARRIOTT COUNTRY CLUB PLAZA,
KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI

APRIL 2-5, 2009

SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS AND
THE UNIVERSITY OF CENTRAL MISSOURI

The 40th Annual International Conference of the SSPHS will take place on April 2-5, 2009, at the Marriott Country Club Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri. The SSPHS invites session proposals on any aspect of Iberian history. The typical panel will include three papers, a chair, and commentator. We welcome proposals for roundtable discussions of a particular work or theme. Proposals should include a 200-word abstract for each paper and a one-page curriculum vitae for each participant, including chairs and commentators. Please include each participant's name, e-mail, mail address, and telephone number, along with any requests for audio/visual equipment or other special requirements.

The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2008.  Participants in the conference must be members of the SSPHS.  See the website for membership information. Students presenting a paper will receive a free membership for their first year, but must still submit the necessary paperwork. Please direct questions about membership to Andrew Lee.

Please submit proposals by email to Luis Corteguera or Marta Vicente. You may also mail them to: Luis Corteguera/Marta Vicente, Program Chairs, 1510 University Drive,
Lawrence, KS 66044.

The SSPHS website provides a forum for members seeking to organize a complete panel or to propose a paper for inclusion in a session.  To post a notice, members in good standing may email an abstract for a paper and/or the title and brief description of a proposed session to James D'Emilio with the heading: “SSPHS proposal 2009”.

The conference will take place at the Country Club Plaza, a retail and entertainment district dating from the early 1920s. According to the Rough Guide, “its tiling, mosaics, fountains, and orange trees evoke the streets of Spain, and a replica of Seville's La Giralda tower completes the effect.” Activities will also take place at the nearby Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, whose new extension received a glowing review in the New Yorker and Time Magazine declared  it “# 1 Architectural Marvel of 2007.”
