Hillsborough River

"When the well is dry, we learn the worth of water."
Benjamin Franklin

Introduction & Scope

Understanding the importance of the watershed in today’s world is a priority. The watershed is an ecosystem that helps provide the public with fresh clean water. Another function of the watershed is to filter pesticides and run-off residue which also keeps the water safe for use. Watersheds are found near the mouths of rivers or along river basins, ponds, streams or lakes. The watershed is home to numerous species of flora and fauna who rely on the watershed for survival. Humans also rely on the watershed for survival as it stores water much like a sponge and replenishes the groundwater system. One of the features of the watershed is that it filters out pollutants so the ground water does not become contaminated. The impact of humans on the watershed is a big concern and has caused the implementation of water management. Land development is a large contributor to problems in the watershed. As developement of the land occurs, it changes the natural flow of water which can result in too much, or more likely, too little water in certain areas. Another factor to consider with land development is an increase in population. Humans impact the watershed by contributing to pollution by means of fertilizers from lawns and sewage from septic tanks wash or seep into the water. Recreational activities also contribute to the problem. Water management is necessary to ensure that the groundwater system doesn't become contaminated.

This pathfinder is intended for a general audience who is interested in learning more about the watershed ecosystem and why the conservation  and management of it is important. Students at the secondary or college level will be able to use this pathfinder to assist them in a research project. The pathfinder was developed for the library at the University of South Florida. It includes print, electronic resources available through the university library system, as well as Internet websites.

"Water is the most basic of all resources. Civilizations grew or withered depending on its availability."
Dr. Nathan W. Snyder, Ralph M. Parsons Engineering
