Schiavo Case Controversy: A

Theresa Marie Schiavo, (Terri) was a
young 26 year old married woman with a full life ahead of her. In February of 1990, Terri Schiavo collapsed
at home and oxygen was cut off to her brain for several minutes. The cause of
the collapse is disputed. Michael Schiavo, Terri's husband blames a cardiac
arrest induced by a potassium imbalance associated with bulimia. The Schindlers, Terri’s parents, suspects that
Michael tried to strangle her. Based on
court testimony by a neurologist Terri had suffered a neck injury when she was admitted to
the hospital and left brain damage.
Besides the saga of how Terri
collapsed was just the beginning.
Fifteen years has past since that February of 1990 and the decision of removing
her feeding tube has become a controversy issue that has the attention of the
Supreme Court. The question raised was who
has the right to say when life is over when there is no will.
On March 18, 2005, Michael Schiavo,
also Terri’s Guardian ad-litem, made the decision to remove Terri’s feeding
tube. On March 31, 2005, Terri died of
defects of dehydration.
