Introduction
Gabriel
Garcia Marquez is a writer whose works if not his name are recognized around
the world. Garcia Márquez, familiarly known as "Gabo", is considered
one of the most significant authors of the twentieth-century. He started as a
journalist, and has written many acclaimed works. His works have attained
important critical acclaim and extensive commercial success, most particularly
for popularizing a literary style labeled as magical realism, using
magical elements and incidents in otherwise ordinary and realistic situations.
When conferring him the Nobel Prize of literature 1982, The Nobel foundation
said: “For his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the
realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a
continent’s life and conflicts.”
The goal of this pathfinder is to offer a research resource planned
to help students concerned in investigating the life of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
As a twentieth-century artist there is an extensive variety of resources which
engage him, including dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographies, and databases;
this pathfinder will emphasize works in these areas. “Gabo” is an international
artist who has lived in different countries throughout his life, and specialist
worldwide have studied and written about him in different languages. Nevertheless,
this pathfinder is limited to English language sources. The resources listed in
this channel are part of the Hillsborough library system, especially at John F.
Germany (JFG) library. Even though this guide refers to items located at JFG,
it is important to mention that there can be found more information in the
entire system, accessing Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative web
site (HCPLC website) .This list
of resources explores potential answers as research guide. Also, this and other
resources can be found using Interlibrary Loan.
“The
tone that I eventually used in One Hundred Years of Solitude was based on the
way my grandmother used to tell stories.
She told things that sounded supernatural and fantastic, but she told
them with complete naturalness…What was most important was the expression she
had on her face. She did not change her
expression at all when telling her stories and everyone was surprised. In previous attempts to write, I tried to
tell the story without believing in it.
I discovered that what I had to do was to believe in myself and write
them with the same expression with which my grandmother told them: with a brick
face.”
