La colección Roatán

Esta colección de 173 artefactos de cerámica fue donada (como un regalo sin restricciones) a la Universidad del Sur de la Florida (USF) en el 1990 por una familia del área de la bahía de Tampa, la cual originalmente adquirió la colección en los años cincuenta de una finca que poseían en el oeste de la isla de Roatán, Honduras, entre Sandy Key y Coxen Hole. Esta colección esta compuesta de cuencos pequeños sin decoración y platos planos, así como otras piezas de cerámica representando fragmento de soportes, mangos, o de aplicación.

 

Basado en estudios estilísticos relacionados a la cerámica de las Islas de la Bahía, y áreas adyacentes de la masa terrestre principal hondureña, datados mediante seriación cerámica y pruebas de radiocarbono (Craig 1967; Epstein 1957; Epstein y Véliz 1977; Goodwin et al. 1979; Healy 1993; Stone 1941; Strong 1933a, 1933b, 1935; Véliz et al. 1977), creemos que los objetos contenidos en la colección de USF fueron probablemente manufacturados durante los periodos Postclásico Temprano y Medio, aproximadamente entre 1000 a 1400 d.C.

 

Este estilo de cerámica parece corresponder a variedad Dorina del tipo Dorina abstracto incisa puntuada, originalmente definidos por Epstein (1957:91-98) y mas tarde descrito por Healy (1993:209-212). Ilustraciones de este tipo de cerámica son numerosas (Epstein 1957:Figuras10, 11g-p; Healy 1993: Figuras 11.17-11.19; Stone 1941: Figuras 9, 36f-h; Strong 1935: lámina 5e-g, 18d, 28a, 31f, 73). Este tipo de cerámica, representado por vasos cilíndricos con paredes rectas y cuencos curveados hacia fuera con paredes en formas de destellos, es principalmente decorada en su exterior con un motivo en forma de “S vaga”, usualmente finamente incisas y compensadas con marcas de puntuación (o de pinchazos). Algunas formas más pequeñas son muchas veces dejadas sin decorar. Los ejemplos de la colección de USF, todos representado formas pequeñas sin decoración, tienden a tener una superficie lisa sin pintar o a veces con un toque de pigmento a base de agua y arcilla, de un color anaranjado pálido y claro (Munsell 2.5-YR 6/8), este de color similar a la pasta, parece haber sido aplicado a algunos de los especimenes.

 

Comparando estos especimenes con las descripciones históricas y las representaciones de la cerámica Pech, los ejemplos contenidos en la colección de USF pudieron haber sido usados por los watas (shamanes) y otros participantes en las ceremonias kesh, llevadas a cabo después de la muerte de un miembro de la comunidad (González et al. 1995). Estas prácticas incluían el consumo de bebidas fermentadas elaboradas a base de yuca (munia) o caña de azúcar y maíz (ostia) así como comidas especiales tales como tamales hechos de yuca (sasal). Las bebidas eran consumidas en guacales, o pequeñas cuencos de arcilla, y los tamales y otras comidas eran servidos en platos pequeños y llanos hechos en cerámica (wakales) u otros hechos en madera (cobres). Hoy en día, las comunidades Pech localizadas en La Moskitia continúan esta tradición, aunque los participantes utilizan frecuentemente platos plásticos en vez de los tradicionales guacales.

 

Los Pech son un grupo indígena que se dedica a la pesca, a la caza, y a la recolección de alimentos, practicando también la horticultura a menor escala. Los Pech ocuparon las Islas de la Bahía durante los siglos trece a diecciseis (Lanza 1992). Después de haber sido desplazados al Valle de Aguan en las tierras continentales de Honduras por los colonizadores españoles e ingleses durante los siglos diecisiete y dieciocho, los Pech hoy en día ocupan porciones de Olancho en la región Miskito a lo largo de los ríos Plátano, Wampu, Grande, Tinto, Cuyamel, y Patuca  (Newman 1986). Al año 2001, los Pech a penas alcanzaban 3,800 personas (haciendo estos el grupo étnico más pequeño en Honduras), dividido en nueve comunidades (Aguilar 2006).

 

Restos arqueológicos relacionados a los Pech pueden ser encontrados en las Islas de la Bahía, en La Ceiba, específicamente en la rivera del Río Plátano, y en Olancho, cerca de la rivera del Río Patuca (González et al 1995:51). La cerámica prehispánica encontrada en las Islas de la Bahía están asociadas con la fase Cocal, la cual corresponde al periodo Postclásico, alrededor del 1000-1530 d.C. (Véliz et al. 1977:11). Cerámicas sin pintar con incisiones y puntuaciones dominan los conjuntos de la fase cocal en las Islas de la Bahía (Goodwin et al. 1979; Strong 1935; Véliz et al. 1977).
