A. H. de OLIVEIRA MARQUES MEMORIAL PRIZE in PORTUGUESE HISTORY

     The Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies is pleased to announce the establishment of the A.H. de Oliveira Marques Memorial Prize in Portuguese History with the support of a generous endowment by Harold Johnson. The prize honors the memory of Professor Antonio Henrique Rodrigo de Oliveira Marques, a distinguished Portuguese historian, director of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (1974-1976), founder of the Centro de Estudos Históricos at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and author of numerous books and studies on medieval Portugal, the first Portuguese Republic, and freemasonry in Portugal. The prize will be awarded at the annual conference of the Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies to the historian whom a committee appointed by the General Secretary of SSPHS determines to have written the best article in the field of Portuguese history published during the calendar year previous to the annual meeting.
