H. de OLIVEIRA MARQUES
MEMORIAL PRIZE in PORTUGUESE HISTORY
The Society for Spanish and Portuguese
Historical Studies is pleased to
announce the establishment of the A.H. de Oliveira Marques Memorial
Prize in Portuguese History with the support of a generous endowment by
Harold Johnson. The prize honors the memory of Professor Antonio
Henrique Rodrigo de Oliveira Marques, a distinguished Portuguese
historian, director of the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal (1974-1976),
founder of the Centro de Estudos Históricos at the Universidade
Nova de Lisboa, and author of numerous books and studies on medieval
Portugal, the first Portuguese Republic, and freemasonry in Portugal.
The prize will be awarded at the annual conference of the Society for
Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies to the historian whom a
committee appointed by the General Secretary of SSPHS determines to
have written the best article in the field of Portuguese history
published during the calendar year previous to the annual meeting.
The Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal has an
exhibit and a webpage
in honor of the life and work of Professor A. H. de Oliveira
Marques.
