Registration and Information for the 2008 SSPHS Conference

The 39th annual meeting of the Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Fort Worth, TX, on April 3-6, 2008 with the generous support of Texas Christian University.  The Hilton, registered as a national historic landmark, is in the heart of downtown Fort Worth’s dining, shopping, and entertainment district, three blocks from Sundance Square, and within a few miles of the world-class Cultural District featuring the Kimbell Art Museum, the Amon Carter Museum, and the Modern Art Museum.  For those who want to enjoy the local flavor of Fort Worth’s Western heritage, the hotel is also within easy reach of the National Cowgirl Museum, Billy Bob’s (the world’s largest honky-tonk), and the daily longhorn cattle drives in the Fort Worth Stockyards.  (Follow links for more information!)

All panel sessions will be held on-site in the hotel’s conference facilities.  Rooms are available to conference participants each night of the meeting (April 3, 4, and 5) at the rate of $150 for single or double occupancy.  Reservations must be made before March 13, 2008, to guarantee this rate.  You may make your reservations by calling the Hilton directly at (817) 870-2100 or the Hilton Toll Free Reservations number 800-HILTONS.  Individuals must identify themselves as being with the SSPHS Meeting at the time the reservation is made in order to receive the special group rate.  You may also make your reservations online by using the conference’s dedicated web link.  (Please note:  the link currently only lets you choose rooms with one king bed.  The hotel offers other options, and they have promised to correct the link soon to reflect these.)

We are honored to welcome as our plenary speaker María Jesús Pablos, Executive Director of the U.S.-Spain. Fulbright Commission.  The Commission celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2008, and we are pleased to use this occasion to recognize its extraordinary influence in supporting historical scholarship and cultural exchange between the U.S. and Spain over the past five decades.  The speech will accompany the banquet, to be held on Saturday night, April 5, in the Hilton Hotel; entrance to the banquet is covered by the conference registration fee.

As part of this year’s program, conference registrants will also have the opportunity to visit Southern Methodist University’s Meadows Museum on Friday morning (no sessions will be scheduled opposite this event).  The Meadows houses one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of Spanish art outside of Spain, including works by El Greco, Velázquez, Ribera, Murillo, Goya, Miró, and Picasso.  In April, the Meadows will feature the exhibition Fernando Gallego and His Workshop:  The Altarpiece from Ciudad Rodrigo, and our group will be treated to a tour of the permanent collection by Director Mark Roglán and a presentation of the Fernando Gallego exhibit by Assistant Curator Amanda Dotseth.  The visit includes lunch in the museum’s Jones Great Hall.  Please indicate with your registration information whether you are interested in joining this visit.

The conference registration fee is $45 for those who pre-register by mail before March 7, 2008, and $50 for those who register after March 7 or at the conference itself.  The registration fee includes the banquet on Saturday evening at the Fort Worth Hilton, as well as a reception on Thursday evening.  A separate fee of $10 will cover the optional Meadows museum trip, including transportation and lunch.  (For those of you who plan to register on-site, please email Jodi Campbell at j.campbell@tcu.edu if you would like to reserve a spot for the Meadows trip, so that we have an accurate count in advance.)  Registration forms will be mailed out shortly, or you may send in the following information:
