The Society for Spanish and Portuguese Historical Studies is pleased
to invite contributions to a Memorial Fund honoring the late Charles Julian
Bishko (1906-2002), Professor Emeritus, University of Virginia
The Memorial Fund will be used to endow an annual prize, to be awarded
for the most significant article published each year by a North American
historian in the field of Medieval Iberian History, Professor Bishko’s field
of specialization.
All contributions to the Memorial Fund, up to a maximum total of $25,000,
will be matched by Professor Harold Johnson, a former colleague of Professor
Bishko’s at the University of Virginia.
Charles Julian Bishko was a distinguished teacher and scholar who is
remembered with respect and admiration both by his colleagues and by the
many students whom he taught during his 39 years of service at the University
of Virginia. He published extensively on the history of Spain and
Portugal. His books include Studies in Medieval Spanish Frontier
History (London, 1980) and Spanish and Portuguese Monastic
History, 600-1300 (London, 1984). In addition, he co-authored
Medieval Studies: A Bibliographical Guide (New York, 1983)
and Charting Democracy in America: Landmarks From History and Political
Thought (Washington, D.C., 1995). Professor Bishko’s scholarship
received wide recognition in North America, as well as in Spain and Latin
America. He was a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, an elected
member of the Spanish Royal Academy of History, and a recipient of one of
Spain’s highest honors, the Order of Isabel la Católica, which was
awarded by King Juan Carlos I in 1986. Upon his retirement from the
University of Virginia in 1977, he received a special tribute from the Spanish
Embassy in Washington, D.C.
