Will my e-mail address change?
Your e-mail address will not change. While your official mailing address will be login@shell.cas.usf.edu, you can continue to use your existing address.
Example: If you are bob@chuma.cas.usf.edu, your official e-mail address will be bob@shell.cas.usf.edu, however bob@chuma.cas.usf.edu will continue to work.
I have a chuma1 or mail.cas.usf.edu account. How do these changes affect me?
They won't. shell.cas.usf.edu will not replace chuma1 or mail.cas.usf.edu.
My mail is forwarded to another address. What will happen to it?
If your mail is forwarded to another address, your mail will continue to be forwarded.
My e-mail address is login@cas.usf.edu. Will anything change for me?
login@cas.usf.edu is a mail alias, and can point to many different servers. If you have an account on chuma, luna, or tarski, but your e-mail address is login@cas.usf.edu, this alias will continue to work.
I use a program like Apple Mail, Netscape Mail or Outlook Express to read mail. Will I have to change anything?
Yes. shell.cas.usf.edu uses SSL to encrypt connections. In order to continue using your mail application, you will have to change your account profile or preferences to use SSL instead of unencrypted connections.
For more information about SSL, please go to Using Mail Applications.
I use Pine to read mail. Will I be able to do so on the new server?
Yes. As long as you have an SSH application to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu, you will be able to use Pine.
TELNET & FTP
I use telnet to connect to my Unix account. Will this change?
Yes. When you use telnet, your password and data are transmitted across the network without any sort of encryption or protection. In order to protect your password and data, shell.cas.usf.edu uses SSH (Secure Shell) instead of telnet.
For more information about SSH, please go to Using SSH.
I use FTP to connect to my Unix account. Will this change?
Yes. As with telnet, FTP transmits your password and data across the network without encryption. In order to protect your password and data, shell.cas.usf.edu uses SCP and SFTP, instead of FTP.
For more information about SCP and SFTP, please go to Using SCP and SFTP.
WEB
I have a website on chuma.cas.usf.edu, luna.cas.usf.edu or tarski.math.usf.edu. Will anything change?
Your website will not change. While your official URL will be http://shell.cas.usf.edu/~login, your old URL will continue to work.
Example: If your website is http://chuma.cas.usf.edu/~bob/, it will now be http://shell.cas.usf.edu/~bob/. Your old URL will continue to work.
I use Dreamweaver for webpage development. Will anything change?
Yes. Since shell.cas.usf.edu uses SFTP and SCP instead of FTP, you will have to change your profile to reflect the change. If you are using Dreamweaver MX 2004, this is very simple. If you are using older versions of Dreamweaver, the process is a bit more lengthy.
For more information about Dreamweaver, please go to Using Dreamweaver.
